The Pope’s Nose

Spread the love

I was preparing the New Year’s turkey earlier this evening, and while getting it ready for the brine, commented to my business partner, “Damn, this turkey has a large “pope’s nose!””

“Huh, what are you talking about?”

Maybe it’s just an Irish thing.. but the butt end of a turkey is known as the “pope’s nose.”  The part you don’t really want to eat.

Oh, I am sure there will be some who will be “offended” by this, those that think irrationally, and don’t understand that words are not the thing.  Well, the offence is all yours :)   It’s quite a common expression in my circle, to have someone announce, “Oooooh!  I’ve got part of the Pope’s Nose on my plate!”

And we all know exactly what the idea is that they are communicating.  No one ever need wonder if indeed, they are talking about the real Pope’s Nose.

Hope you have a wonderful New Year, and if you have turkey on New Year’s day, may the “Pope’s Nose” not be on your plate.
